No Waste College Prep Pt. 2 – Dorm Shopping

Zero Waste Dorm Shopping

So, I found this ridiculously long list of things that a soon to be college student needs to buy for college, specifically their dorm. A ton of the things were disposables or trash that don’t fit into the zero waste lifestyle. Here is my guide for shopping for college, zero waste, and what you actually sifted from the unnecessary things.

Bathroom & Toiletries

Cleaning Supplies

  • Bulk Castille Soap for dish washing liquid
  • Bulk White Vinegar
  • Bulk soap or castille soap for hand soap.
  • Plenty of rags or towels. (No paper towels, obviously)
  • Dish rags & dish towels.

School Supplies

  • Reusable Cotton Tote or Eco-Friendly Backpack. I just use a heavy cotton tote.
  • Naked Binders, these are 100% recyclable.
  • Biodegradable printer paper for making copies or assignments you have to turn in.
  • Pencil Pouch
  • iPad or something digital for taking notes
  • Mechanical pencils. You can get a biggie like this (it’s awesome) or cheaper ones. Shouldn’t need too many if you’re taking notes on your tablet or something digital.
  • Refillable pens. (Yet again, way more expensive, but you shouldn’t need many anyway, and this pen is better than any you’ve ever used before.)
  • Erasers. Most erasers are made from petroleum. These are nice.
  • Stapleless Stapler.
  • You do not need:
    • Notebooks
    • note cards
    • really any paper goods
    • rubber bands
    • pencil sharpener
    • staples
    • disposables (if it sounds like trash it is. Find a replacement)
    • paper clips

Dorm Stuff

  • Laundry Supplies
    • Bulk natural laundry detergent
    • Reusable dryer balls instead of dryer sheets

I’ll add more as I think of it, and as time goes on.

Let me know if you have any ideas!

See ya,
